Roasted pears

Quartered, cored and rubbed with olive oil and salt.

Roasted with a little ginger and fat wedges of pumpkin until soft and well caramelised.

Pureed in a soup.

Good with other roasted veg, but just as good on their own. Sweet, juicy and succulent.

So simple, so wonderful! Who needs complicated food anyway?

Beautiful photo!

Roasted Pears and Pumkin, it just sounds so good. Something I'll just have to make.

Cynthia - it's lovely.

Rosa, some days I love complex, multi-layered dishes, but most of the time, simple as you say, is so much better!

Freya and Paul, thank you. Wasn't really sure about the photo at first, but looking at it now, it's fine.

Hi Julie - it's a great autumnal combination of flavours and the pears add so much flavour.

Freya & Paul are right. That photo is incredible. Pears lend themselves so beautifully to still life. Just as impressive, they never fail in a recipe, even when they aren't quite ripe. I'm beginning to think I don't care how hot it now is here - I want soup.

Love their shapes too Susan - lovely curvaceous things to draw or paint. Roasted like this they develop a sticky but savoury caramel surface. It's about the closest thing I've found to those bits that stick to the bottom of the tray when you roast a chook! My food find of the year (so far).

Soup often feels good, regardless of the season, doesn't it? Seems as though our hot days have finally given way to cooler days and nights. That said, yesterday was glorious, sunny and warm - and with winter only 5 days away!

mmmm... nice Lucy .... very nice! And great wooden board in the pic. I need to hit the road one of these weekends and go on a flea market/antique shop crawl looking for some nice props like that for my pics... thinking a slab of marble might be a nice thing to have for that purpose?!

What a beautiful combination of flavours!

I've never tried roasting a pear, but I have roasted peaches and plums - messy job, but so very worth it :)

I'll have to give pears a shot this weekend!

Stephanie - a slab of marble would be an invaluable, beautiful prop. The Artist is obsessed with collecting wooden things (chopping boards, driftwood, bits of stick from the side of the road...) and this is one of my favourites.

Truffle - it works a treat!

Hi Shawnda. Your peaches and plums sound like a great idea.

Yum! I keep forgetting that pears are in season elsewhere in the world. I'm definitely using your idea for a pear-enriched soup when it rolls around to fall-time here.

Lucy, I love your idea of roasting pumpkin and pears together - I tried it out last night with some garlic and fresh thyme and it was beautiful

Sophie, nice of you to drop in - your idea with garlic and thyme is delicious.

Amazing flavour those pears, quite unexpectedly good. Now I'm imagining it with thyme and garlic, just as the thyme goes mad in the garden...
